AC Transit is the primary metro transportation provider in Oakland, CA and runs buses to the Jack London Square station for travelers looking for an Amtrak train ride. If you're heading to San Francisco for the day and want to avoid taking the San Francisco - Oakland Bay Bridge, then a ferry is the perfect way to get there. Visitors can catch the SF Bay ferry at the Jack London Square Terminal.

Oakland shares a very similar temperature with San Fran. With a top average high temperature of 74 degrees in September and a bottom average low of 44 degrees in January, Oakland has a very mild, moderately warm temperature profile. The moisture off the bay can create fog cover, providing a cool breeze during those days that get too hot.

Major Employers

As is common in many major cities, Oakland's largest employer is a health care provider. Kaiser Permanente has both a hospital and its corporate offices in Oakland. 2nd and 3rd on the list are Alameda County followed by the City of Oakland. Other major employers include the Bay Area Rapid Transit system, the State of California, and Southwest Airlines.

Central Neighborhoods

Downtown Oakland

Downtown Oakland is the heart of Oakland and one of the best places to go shopping, see entertainment, and experience the arts in the entire city. Museums include the Oakland Museum of CA and the African American Museum and Library at Oakland.

West Oakland

West Oakland includes Prescott, Oak Center, Cypress Village, and several other neighborhoods. As a primary I-80 access point, it's surrounded by interstates on all sides. Some of the most interesting activities in the area include the Trapeze Arts, where students learn circus skills including trapeze work and aerial dancing. The Mandela Pkwy runs vertically through the neighborhood, providing bikers with a center strip to ride the On-Street Bay Trail Bikeway.

Lakeside is a small but engaging neighborhood located along the western shores of Lake Merritt. One of the areas most widely visited event centers is the Oakland Scottish Rite Center where visitors can frequently see unique productions or book the building for their own events. If you need to get into nature, the lakefront isn't your only option. Snow Park is also a popular Lakeside hangout, complete with a putting green and small pitching wedge golf course.

Uptown is home to legendary Fox Theater, where you can catch a comedy or music show nearly every night of the week. Originally opening in 1928, this theater can seat 2,800. Catch a play or dance at the Paramount Theatre, or if sports are more you're speed, Uptown is home to the Oakland Ice Center for public skating or a local hockey game.

China Town

Like many coastal cities, Oakland has a China Town neighborhood complete with a Chinese Garden Park. With immigration to Oakland dating back to the 1850's, Oakland's China Town has developed its own Chamber of Commerce, unique storefronts, and cultural centers like the Pacific Coast Immigration Museum.
