Aurora takes advantage of diverse transportation options thanks to its proximity to Denver. You can travel by bus, light rail, bike, private ground transportation, and several ride-share programs. As part of the Regional Transportation District (RTD) of Denver, Aurora enjoys access to the R Line through the city center, the H Line that hugs the 225 and 25 freeways and connects to downtown Denver, and the A Line that connects the north stretch of Aurora to Denver International. RTD also offers at least 18 routes for local bus service that takes you all across the city. You can use bike lanes to travel city-wide using your own bicycle, or you can use the shared-mobility program for access to rented bikes and scooters.

Nestled close to the Rocky Mountains, Aurora enjoys plenty of sunshine and mountain views. The region experiences all four seasons, with summer months clear and dry and winter months offering a mix of sun, cloud, and precipitation. The higher elevation results in low humidity, but it also results in a more arid climate where sun protection and hydration are crucial. Daytime temperatures range from the mid-40s in winter to the high-80s in summer, and nighttime temperatures see a range of the mid-20s in winter to the low-60s in summer. Living in Aurora, you can expect about 15 inches of rain over the year and an average of 58 inches of snow each winter.

Major Employers

In Aurora, major employers focus on four key industries: military/defense, education, healthcare, and technology. The sprawling University of Colorado Anschutz medical campus is the largest employer with 19,000-plus employees, while the Buckley Air Force Base takes second place with over 12,000employees. Other significant employers include the Aurora Public Schools District that employs 5,100, the Cherry Creek Public Schools District that employs 7,000, and RaytheonTechnologies that employs 2,400 in its local office (it merged with United Technologies Corporation in 2020). The City of Aurora is an employer for about 3,900 residents, while technology companies like 24/7 Intouch, Tyco Integrated Security, and ADT Inc. employ about 1,200, 850, and 700 people, respectively.

Aurora Neighborhoods

City Center and City Center North are adjacent neighborhoods in the heart of Aurora. Contrary to their names, these joint neighborhoods have a decidedly casual, modern feel with mixed-use development. Combined with apartment complexes and single-family homes, you’ll find everything from shopping centers to restaurants and commercial shops. When you want to grab a bite, consider local favorites include Cuba Bakery and Café, Helga’s German Restaurant and deli, and Raising Cane’s chicken fingers. This neighborhood duo is also home to the High Line Canal Trail, City Center Park, and Settler’s Park, where people love to jog, stroll, and shoot some hoops.

Aurora Hills is low-key with family-friendly vibes. This primarily residential neighborhood runs from the 225 to Peoria St. and from Alameda Ave. to Mississippi Ave., where you find plenty of meandering streets and well-maintained sidewalks perfect for a morning or evening stroll. People in Aurora Hills love to take their pets on walks and enjoy the green fields at Virginia Court Park or Wheeling Park. Along with two elementary schools and one middle school, Aurora Hills offers residents shopping and dining spots at both ends of its neighborhood limits.

An attractive neighborhood full of wide streets and stately, mature trees, Heather Ridge is home to people who love the outdoors. You can jog along the sidewalks or head up Westerly Creek Trail on your way to nearby Utah Park or Jewell Wetlands Park, a 50-acre wildlife sanctuary perfect for birding enthusiasts or anyone who loves to be in nature. Heather Ridge also offers good schools, a popular golf course, and dining spots like Masha and the Bear Russian Café, Beantree Coffee, and Uncle Zoe’s Chinese Kitchen.

Centretech has a unique flavor as a residential, educational, and commercial hub. This neighborhood is next to City Center North and boasts even more open space and the continuation of the popular High Line Canal Trail. Jog, ride your bike, or strap on those rollerblades for a lengthy fitness session. Centre Hills Park also offers a loop path for pedestrians and a disc golf course with 18 holes. The nearby 158-acre DeLaney Farm Historic District has open space, historical farm buildings, and the 5-acre DeLaney Community Farm, a community-supported agriculture (CSA) farm that offers farm-stand produce to the public.

Life in Centre Pointe moves at a calm, leisurely pace, with plenty of opportunities to head outdoors. This family-friendly neighborhood is primarily residential and offers a mix of housing and generous sidewalks ideal for daily strolls. Toll Gate Creek Trail runs north to south along West Toll GateCreek, offering several access points as it makes its way down Centre Pointe. You can enjoy time at TollgatePark or the paved paths along Norfolk Way Trail.

Heather Gardens, a tree-lined neighborhood in south-central Aurora, offers a mix of family-friendly housing between Iliff Ave and Yale Ave. You can find plenty of casual vibes here, along with friendly competition at the tennis/pickleball courts in Crestridge Park. Heather Gardens also boasts two hotels for out-of-town guests, good access to the Cherry Creek Spillway Trail, and the light rail Iliff Station for the H Line and R Line. For taste eats, consider local favorites like The French Press, Village Inn, and Texas Roadhouse.
